Painting in Skopelos

1-P10903291-P1030264

I’m currently relaxing in Northern Greece following two wonderful weeks on the gorgeous island of Skopelos.  It really is a beautiful island with the main town spilling down the hillside in a confusing maze of steps and laneways. Many of these are draped with brightly coloured plants, lined with pots, and scattered with churches and tiny chapels.

I was on Skopelos to tutor at the inaugural Skopelos Art Painting Holidays and what a great week that was. Our base was the Mercurius Bar which looked out over the turquoise harbour and bobbing boats. We had a great group of all abilities, some from Sydney and some from New Zealand, and for a change they all spoke the same language as me!

We launched into the painting by having a play around with the great palette of brilliant watercolours provided, initially painting some colourful still lifes, then moving onto something that caught the eye of each student – there was a huge amount to choose from very close by, with bougainvillea and other climbers in every direction, typical Greek street scenes (you needed to tuck your legs in quickly to save them from the odd passing car or motorbike), a nice selection of interesting pots and plants, lovely window frames, old doors, and even a little chapel.

At the end of the first morning, we were rewarded with a huge lunch at Agnondas, a serene little fishing village further along the island, and we ended the day with lots of swimming and loafing about. Well deserved I think!

Towards the end of Day 2 we moved onto acrylic paints, with a quick still life in acrylics, in readiness for some On Location painting the following day, when we once again headed off to Agnondas,  Here we set up in the shady taverna on the water’s edge and each student selected their subject to paint. Everyone worked incredibly hard all morning, and produced some great paintings, all strangely enough in a very similar colour palette!

The next few days passed in a blur of creativity, continuing to paint in acrylics, coming to grips with the use of the ink and stick, and battling two very hot days. We were well looked after with plenty of iced water and frappees and coffee each day, along with some very yummy almond florentines from the bakery. Paintings were finished and new ones started, including a small canvas.  It was wonderful to see the paintings appear and the confidence so quickly gained, and everyone’s style becoming evident.

It was a great week that went by far too quickly with some wonderful paintings to show for it. Thank you Margie and Andrew for making it possible.

If you like the sound of painting, sunshine and plenty of good fun on a beautiful Greek Island, why not consider joining us next year on Skopelos?!

Acrylic Painting – May Class 4

The last week for this group of 3, and the first class to come close to completing two acrylic paintings over the 4 week course!  Brilliant work everyone. I love the way each of you are developing the technique to show your own individual styles. Keep on painting over the summer if you can…….

Acrylic Painting – May Class 3

The 3 painters were very close to finishing their paintings when they started this morning. This can sometimes be a rather drawn out process, with lots and lots of tweaking. Its amazing how, when you put a tiny bit of colour on just one area of the painting, it can impact other areas, and sometimes this can go on and on, but that’s very normal. Ask any artist?!

By the end of the morning though, we had two completed and one ‘not sure if it’s finished’ paintings – beautiful work by all three. We also had some very promising beginnings of 3 new works, all working against the clock to get as much done before our last day next Monday.

Then there were some great starts on 3 new underpaintings.

Many thanks everyone for changing the day for me so I could meet my Sydney friends on the cruise ship!

Acrylic Painting – May Class 2

After a slow start on a chilly Monday, the brushes started flying furiously and by the end of the morning, all three students were nearing the completion of their paintings. A little more ink will be assisting in the finishing process of a couple of them, and I know, everyone’s looking forward to starting on their second paintings next week.

Acrylic Painting – May Class 1

The start of another 4 week course, this time with a smaller group of three. Everyone made a fantastic effort this morning, and finished well into, or just finishing, the lovely loose ink stage.  These very different under-paintings are exactly on track and next week they’ll be moving onto the next stages of thicker and lighter paint.  Keep up the great work everyone.

Acrylic Painting – April Class 4

This was the last morning of acrylics class for this group of cheerful artists and great progress was made throughout the course, with some wonderful achievements. Those paintings that didn’t quite get finished are so very close, and I look forward to seeing the final result.

Many thanks everyone for your hard work and enthusiasm over the four weeks. I hope you’re all feeling inspired to keep on painting!

Acrylic Painting – April Class 3

Everyone struggled a bit this week but I do find this often happens at this stage of the painting, so hang in there and they will all come together next week. The beautiful paintings below are most definitely on track, and mostly very close to finishing. Apologies, some of the colours are a little exaggerated this week!

Acrylic Painting – April Class 1

Back into Gill’s studio for another exciting four weeks of Acrylic Painting for 6 keen artists. We have a nice mixture of beginners and more experienced students in this group. Being the first class, there’s always a lot of revving up, and instruction from me, and after some ‘exploring’ of the primary colours in the palettes, everyone was painting furiously.  By the end of the morning the whole group had made an incredible start on their first paintings.

As you can see below, the class finished with everyone at a different stage of their ‘ink work’. The ink, applied with a stick, has allowed them to redraw, redefine, move objects, and add texture to their paintings. Some will go straight into thicker paint immediately next week (after revising their darks of course!) others will continue inking for a little longer…..

Beginners Acrylics – Class 4

This was the last week for this keen group, and considering 3 of them had never painted before, they produced some excellent paintings, as did the more experienced student.BWk4-AnnetteAll finished now after some extra hard work this morning

BWk4-JennyA few little light touches will be added onto these lovely tulips at home.

BWk4-Marion

With so much wonderful ink-work, this one will take a little longer to pull together with the lighter layer, but it’s looking great, and I look forward to seeing the finished work.

BWk4-JanThis rather demanding subject matter has been given a nice delicate touch and is finished as well.

Well done and thanks everyone for the hard work. I know it is a lot to absorb over four weeks, and it’s been really rewarding to see the progress everyone has made. I hope you will all continue painting happily.
