Art Weekly No 149 – Rock Formation, Northland

AW-149_RockFormation-Northl11th September 2014 –

I’m having some long sessions in the ‘studio’ right now to get a pile of paintings finished before we leave for Sydney, and its just occurred to me that most of them are buildings or boats. I was wondering why I’ve been feeling the urge to paint something organic. This happens occasionally and its rather relaxing not to worry about straight lines or perspective!

This is a portion of one of the beautifully coloured rocks that I came across when staying at Tinopai in New Zealand a few years ago.  I must admit I do have a bit of a ‘thing’ about rock formations and I’ve only used a little artistic licence with the colours!  As usual, I took a multitude of photos when I discovered them, and two or three have already become paintings over the years.  I am also working on two similar ones in a larger format.

Whilst writing this, I’m reminded that some of these photos (plus other ‘organic discoveries’ in Tinopai) are still on the Primrose Park Photography website, a really friendly photography group I used to belong to in Sydney. If you’d like to take a look,
