Northern Territory Coral #1

oc-08_ntcoral1

This painting forms part of my ‘Oceans’ series and the photograph of this coral was taken by James in the Northern Territory of Australia. It seemed a unusually dull coloured coral, and I tried to keep my usual love for bright colours under control.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Oceans.

Nearly Open, Honfleur

PN-07_NearlyOpen-Honfleur

Honfleur has long been one of my favourite towns in France and its well known throughout the world for its beautiful harbour, which I’ve painted a few times. On our last visit I also tried to photograph the colours of the cafes and restaurants lining the harbour which are still very much a huge part of Honfleur.

Art Weekly 171 – Fiskardo, Kefalonia

AW-171_Fiskardo-Kefalonia26th May 2016

It seems every time I send out an Art Weekly these days, I apologise for my tardiness! I’ve been working on larger canvasses recently, and the AWs seem to have taken a back seat. However, I’ve now decided to absorb some of my paintings from the #100 Painting Challenge which I’ve been taking part in, into the Art Weekly mailouts. They are smaller, hence the price reduction, and perhaps a little simplified, which I rather like. If you follow me on either Facebook or Instagram you may well have seem some of these!

This one is a small bay in Fiskardo, a lovely Venetian town in the north of Kefalonia. The water around the island is a brilliant turquoise, and I had fun capturing it, using acrylic inks for a change, in an endeavour to keep the freshness. It seems fitting to send this painting out today, as we’re heading to Kefalonia on Monday to meet up with my eldest son James, and his partner Danielle. We plan to spend a few days there, and on Zagkynthos, before coming back down to Koroni. Let’s hope our usual Greek summer kicks in soon!

This painting is the first of my new ‘Impressions’ series, and a loose interpretation of the beautiful Italian Cinque Terre village, Riomaggiore. I’m working in mostly acrylic paint for this series, but using a variety of tools to apply the paint to the canvas.

Art Weekly 170 – Quiet Streets, Polperro

AW-170-Polperro,Cornwall27th April 2016

Apologies for another large gap in my Art Weekly paintings. I’ve been working on various large canvasses, and somehow haven’t managed to finish off any of the small ones I have patiently waiting. I hope to finish my Newsletter very soon, so you will be able to get a peek at where my energies have been directed!

This is a a street scene from the lovely town of Polperro in Cornwall. It was December when were there, and a tad chilly, hence the deserted look of the place. I believe during the summer months, it’s a whole different story!

Art Weekly 169 – Menton Rooftops

AW-169_MentonRooftops31st March 2016

Its been a while since my last Art Weekly, but we’re now back in Koroni and I’m attempting to break the ‘creative block’ and get back into painting. I find it always takes a while to settle down after travelling.

I’ve painted the lovely French town of Menton, near the Italian border, so many times. There’s something I love about the colourful old buildings crammed together above the port – part French, part Italian, and I can never get enough photos when we visit – every one a potential painting! This trip we were only passing through Menton, but did stop off to meet my ex Sydney neighbours, of many years, for lunch – a perfect rendezvous and wonderful to see them!

Art Weekly 168 – Petals Underfoot

AW-168_PetalsUnderfoot

0th February 2016

You may have noticed I’ve been including the word ‘Underfoot’ in some of my new paintings just recently. This started way back in 2003 when I did an abstract painting from a photo I took of the ground in a thermal area in New Zealand. I loved the orange and creamy colours and various textures that I saw when I looked down to where I had placed my feet …. hence ‘underfoot! Admittedly, I have for some time, taken photos of the ground, along with rocks, rust and peeling paint – odd I know!  Anyway, this little one was taken outside our apartment over the summer when the good old Greek wind had left me a nice pile of petals and leaves, just waiting to be painted!

Art Weekly 167 – Annecy, France

AW-167_Annecy_France-800
4th February 2016

I’ve always loved seeing photos of Annecy in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, and we finally had a visit there in September. The architecture and scenery is so very different from what I’m used to in the South. The historic centre is jammed with cobbled lanes, tiny canals and pastel coloured houses, so my camera was clicking overtime! Our hotel was right in the midst of it all, so there was plenty of scope for exploring, and we were lucky to be there for market day for even more photos!

Annecy is also known for it’s beautiful lake which is reputed to be the cleanest in Europe due to strict environmental regulations imposed back in the 1960’s. Being in the Alps, there is plenty of snow in winter, but we were impressed to hear that they don’t even use salt on the roads, so that the lake is kept in it’s pristine condition.  Good news for us considering we bought ourselves a new car there!
