Art Weekly 169 – Menton Rooftops

AW-169_MentonRooftops31st March 2016

Its been a while since my last Art Weekly, but we’re now back in Koroni and I’m attempting to break the ‘creative block’ and get back into painting. I find it always takes a while to settle down after travelling.

I’ve painted the lovely French town of Menton, near the Italian border, so many times. There’s something I love about the colourful old buildings crammed together above the port – part French, part Italian, and I can never get enough photos when we visit – every one a potential painting! This trip we were only passing through Menton, but did stop off to meet my ex Sydney neighbours, of many years, for lunch – a perfect rendezvous and wonderful to see them!

Art Weekly 168 – Petals Underfoot

AW-168_PetalsUnderfoot
1
0th February 2016

You may have noticed I’ve been including the word ‘Underfoot’ in some of my new paintings just recently. This started way back in 2003 when I did an abstract painting from a photo I took of the ground in a thermal area in New Zealand. I loved the orange and creamy colours and various textures that I saw when I looked down to where I had placed my feet …. hence ‘underfoot! Admittedly, I have for some time, taken photos of the ground, along with rocks, rust and peeling paint – odd I know!  Anyway, this little one was taken outside our apartment over the summer when the good old Greek wind had left me a nice pile of petals and leaves, just waiting to be painted!

Art Weekly 167 – Annecy, France

AW-167_Annecy_France-800
4th February 2016

I’ve always loved seeing photos of Annecy in the Rhone-Alpes region of France, and we finally had a visit there in September. The architecture and scenery is so very different from what I’m used to in the South. The historic centre is jammed with cobbled lanes, tiny canals and pastel coloured houses, so my camera was clicking overtime! Our hotel was right in the midst of it all, so there was plenty of scope for exploring, and we were lucky to be there for market day for even more photos!

Annecy is also known for it’s beautiful lake which is reputed to be the cleanest in Europe due to strict environmental regulations imposed back in the 1960’s. Being in the Alps, there is plenty of snow in winter, but we were impressed to hear that they don’t even use salt on the roads, so that the lake is kept in it’s pristine condition.  Good news for us considering we bought ourselves a new car there!

Art Weekly 166 – Sissi Reflections, Crete

AW-166_SissiReflections_Crete

20th January 2016 –

Its a cold wet winter’s day here in Greece, so its nice to add something a little more cheerful to remind myself what’s in store! We spent the night in Sissi a while back. Its a small town on the north coast of Crete and it had all the criteria for a great little Greek stop-over – lots of tavernas, bright blue water and reflections!

This painting is a little smaller than usual as it forms part of my #100 Painting Challenge in which I’m trying different techniques and mediums. This painting however, somehow managed to turn out in my ‘usual style’!

Art Weekly 165 – Bologna Portico

AW-165_BolognaPortico-800
13th January 2016 –

Bologna, Italy again. I really love this city although it always seems that when we start off in southern Italy, or this time, Sicily, by the time we arrive in Bologna, autumn is always waiting for us. Still, with Bologna’s 40 kilometres of porticoes, what better place to have a little inclement weather!

Art Weekly 164 – No Surf, Lakes Entrance

AW-164_NoSurf-Lakes Entrance

23rd December 2015 –

Firstly, I’ll take this opportunity to wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and Very Best Wishes for a safe and healthy 2016.

I thought this little painting would be appropriate this Christmas week, whilst thinking of those of you in the Southern Hemisphere just about to launch yourselves into the summer holidays.

On our jaunt down the east coast of Australia earlier this year, we visited some beautiful beach-side towns and we always make a point of wandering along the beaches. We spent a night in Lakes Entrance, a reasonably nice place in Victoria, but to me mostly memorable, due to the wonderful ‘Aussie’ hamburger I managed to scoff, complete with beetroot! The beach there was beautiful, with true golden sand and tiers of blue and green water, which, of course, captured my eye and had the camera clicking. Absolutely no surf though!

Art Weekly 163 – Come Inside, Chania, Crete

AW-163_ComeInside-Chania,Crete

16th December 2015 –

A different colour palette with this painting, which was I found a bit tricky as so many of my recent paintings have been in blues and greens.  Strangely too, this painting hails from the lovely Chania in Crete, as did my previous one.  There are so many beautiful little laneways packed with inviting restaurants and bars there, so plenty of exploring required.

Art Weekly 162 – Blue Door, Chania, Crete

AW-162_BlueDoor,Chania-Cret
16th November 2015 –

Finally, back into it……It’s been some time since I sent out a weekly painting as we’ve been on the road yet again – two months of driving around Sicily, Italy, France and the UK – blogs to come soon hopefully!  This painting I had hoped to finish before we left, but it just didn’t quite come together in time.

I took this photo whilst wandering around the back streets of Chania on the lovely Greek island of Crete. It’s just one of the many peeling, battered, doors I’ve photographed over the years, and I suspect it was the peeling blue and orange paint that encouraged me to paint this one.

This door was in what seemed to be in an interesting old Turkish area of the town with the nearby Agios Nicholas church which was built back in Venetian times. It was unusual in that it had an Ottoman minaret still standing, as well as a lovely Greek Orthodox domed bell tower. Wonderful that they have the been able to incorporate all three periods of history and leave them standing for future generations.

Art Weekly 161 – The Strand, Townsville

AW-161_TheStrand-Townsville

28th July 2015 –

Back in Koroni again now after a month away up north. Its very hot and always hard to get into painting at this time of the year, but I only have August before we take off again, so am being tough on myself!

When we were in Australia a couple of years ago, we spent a great week exploring a little of Queensland – the first time I’d ever been north of Noosa!  We spent a few days in Townsville and our hotel was directly across the road from beach. This bright blue lifesaver’s hut appealed to me, sitting amongst the palm trees. Admittedly, It did seem a little bigger than others I’d seen, but when you think of all the extra gear they need for protection from the box jelly fish, I guess its not surprising!

Art Weekly 160 – Paulette, Cotignac, Provence

AW-160_Paulette-Cotignac-me
1st July 2015 –

A few years ago when I was tootling around France on my own, I spent a couple of nights in Cotignac, a lovely little town in the Var region of Provence. I’d remembered staying there way back in the 1970’s and was passing through the area, so I thought I’d take another look. Cotignac is very typical of the small towns and villages in the area, with lovely shady trees and a fountain in ‘la place’   – so very cool and relaxing on a hot summers day.

There were two beautiful little shops in the town with wonderful dilapidated faded facades, one of which was ‘Paulette’, and the other right next door, ‘Drougerie’. I’ve had the photos of them waiting patiently to be painted for a few years now, so here’s the first one!  Oh, did I mention that old faded shopfronts are another of my passions!
