Art Weekly 159 – Low Tide, Venus Bay

AW-159_LowTide-VenusBay,Vic10th June 2015 –

I’ve always had a passion for the ocean, and particularly love the patterns that appear in the water, whether they’re caused by the movement of the tides, the wind, or the sunlight. Its wonderful to be able to sit on our terrace and stare at the Med, but there is something special about the moving ocean with it’s waves, tides and the patterns it leaves behind. To my mind, there are so many abstract paintings there just waiting to be created. I seem to be on a bit of an exploration journey amongst the waves right now?!

I took this photo when we did a wonderful road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in February. It was a great drive along the coastal road, stopping off for nights wherever we felt looked inviting. Venus Bay in Victoria was just a brief visit, but there’s always time for photos of the water when it’s doing something a bit special!

Art Weekly 158 – Barga Rooftops, Italy

AW-158_BargaRooftops-Italy3rd June 2015 –

A couple of years ago, we spent a week in Barga with two Australian friends. We rented a lovely house near the top of the village just under the Romanesque Duomo which entertained us with its unusual bell ringing. Thankfully, the ‘key’ to these mystery sequences was given to us by our wonderful landlord, Frank.

Barga is a medievale town in the Lucca province of Italy, and perfectly placed to use as a base to explore the delights of various famous Tuscan towns. It was a great example of what I consider a perfect hilltop town with buildings of crumbling character, lots of narrow laneways, cafes and restaurants, but nothing too touristy.

Art Weekly 157 – Cafe Louis, Paris

smAW-157_CafeLouis-Paris25th May 2015 –

I’ve walked past this little cafe many times, but have to admit I’ve never had coffee there. I’m sure it was the colour scheme that caught my eye – there’s something very calming about turquoise and white, but that could be the Greek influence! Whatever my reason, I feel it’s a typical Parisian corner cafe, just crying out to be painted, and visited on our next stay.

Art Weekly No 156 – Roses at the Chateau 2

AW-156_Roses-at-the-Chateau11th May 2015 –

A few years ago my Art Weekly No 70 was a painting of dusky pink roses leaning against the gates of a chateau in the Charente area of France. These brilliant red roses were growing abundantly against another wall of that same chateau, and I’ve been intending to paint them for some time.

The photo brings back lovely memories of driving through France, from the Lot up to Normandy, in early summer. I had booked myself into this small chateau, and when I arrived all I could see was a large doorbell with ‘sonnez svp’ on it, so I did (push, that is).  After some time a slightly disheveled man appeared, who said that Madam was somewhere in the chateau gardens, and could I go and find her, and she would check me in!  It was on my wander around the gardens to locate Madam that I found myself in the different areas with so many beautiful flowers. I did eventually find Madam, who wasn’t after all sitting in the sunshine sipping her pastis and reading a book. She was equally as disheveled as Monsieur, and knee deep amongst the weeds in her wellies!  I had a wonderful relaxing night’s stay in a massive room, and an excellent breakfast!

Art Weekly 155 – The Wave

AW-155_The-Wave28th April 2015 –

I’ve always had a passion for waves, something we generally only get here when its stormy, and then the skies tend to be rather grey and forbidding.  I suspect the magic of waves has been tucked away at the back of my mind over recent years whilst I’ve been busy drooling over the crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean. I love the movement and patterns created along the shores, though this can certainly be said for all types of sea and oceans.

Whilst in Sydney my eldest son, James, showed me some wonderful  ‘wave’ photos that he’d recently taken and felt I just had to attempt to paint some, perhaps in a fairly abstract fashion.  James and his partner, Danielle, spent a large part of last year travelling and filming around the Australian coastline documenting marine reserves and sanctuary areas. Take a look at their website http://bluebottlefilms.com/ for more of James’ stunning photography and their documentaries and videos.

I must have absorbed something of their enthusiasm for the sea, as I’ve decided that I’m going to immerse myself in a series of large canvasses with that theme, sometimes waves, or just capturing the gentle ripples of the Med. Its a wonderful feeling losing oneself in the formation and colours of the ocean!  I will pull myself back to reality for my Art Weekly paintings though!

Art Weekly 154 – Tuscan Fields, Italy

AW-154_TuscanFields_Italy20th April 2015 –

How can it be that 2015 is nearly into its fifth month, I wonder? Apologies for the long gap between paintings and blogs. Five months of travel just somehow got in the way, despite my good intentions.  I’ve nearly finished a blog about our latest travels… so stayed tuned.

The start of our trip was Italy, as we tend to fly out of Paris after sorting out various bits of French bureaucracy. Its always wonderful to get off the overnight ferry in Bari (the southern route works well for us in winter) and head towards one of our favourite little towns in Puglia for some good Italian coffee. At some stage of the trip we usually drive through Tuscany, which is a real treat, as I love the formation of the rolling hillsides with the lines of cypress trees and a villa or two tucked alongside.  As I mentioned in the accompanying email to this, I imagine these hills are covered in wheat in the summer months – what a beautiful sight that must be. We will have to reorganise our schedule to see these sometime soon.

Art Weekly 153 – Strolling in San Francisco

AW-153_Strolling-in-San-Fran

26th November 2014

We’re currently in Los Angeles, and although we didn’t visit San Francisco this trip, I thought it appropriate to have an American painting this week!  We’ve just spent a week in the Pacific North West and Vancouver. It was all quite stunning, and very different from down this way, and much colder.

The photo for this painting was taken in Little Italy. We were wandering around and looking for coffee as per usual, and felt very at home amongst all the Italian cafes. There was something about the blue buildings and red awning that caught my eye!

Art Weekly 152 – Menton Colours, France

Menton Colours, France

11th November 2014 – SOLD

Menton is one of my favourite places in France, It’s a bustling town on the Riveria and just across the border from Italy, which gives it a wonderful mixture of Italian and French. The buildings, particularly in the ‘Old Town’ have the wonderful coloured facades of Italy, and thankfully the coffee is generally more Italian-style as well!

In February each year, Menton holds la Fete du Citron (the Lemon Festival), the only place in Europe I’ve seen a 5 metre tall Kiwi made of lemons being parading proudly down the street!

Art Weekly 151 – Three Figs

AW-151-ThreeFigs21st October 2014 –

The Greek summer is behind us now, and all the figs have finished. This year seemed to have produced a bumper crop, and I’ve had my full share of figs of all shapes and sizes. My favourites are the yellowish ones (honey figs?) which seem to appear earlish, but for a short season initially. Then for the next 3 months, there’s an abundance of various purple varieties, and again more yellow ones – they just seem to go on forever!  I even managed to grow about a dozen myself, in a pot on the balcony!

Art Weekly 150 – Spring Olive Grove, Greece

AW-150_SpringOliveGrove-23rd September 2014 –

Its such a pity that most visitors come to Greece in the summer and miss out on the wild flowers during the spring months.  Its a beautiful season, particularly in this area, as all the olive groves seem to burst into bloom with varying coloured carpets of flowers, changing as spring goes on. One day you might see pink or white carpets nestled under the trees, then a couple of weeks later everything will have changed to a brilliant yellow and then onto mauve. Of course, this is also when the poppies start to appear, but in all honestly I can’t really say they form carpets under the trees!  They do often appear in clumps in and around the olive groves though, sometimes accompanied with the beautiful vibrant blue wild irises.
