Snapshot of Koroni

June 2018

This painting is portraying, in simple form, the small Greek town in the Peloponnese, where I currently spend a good deal of each year.  Koroni, like a lot of small coastal towns in Greece, has a lovely buzzing harbour, with whitewashed buildings spilling down from the surrounding hills.

The painting is in acrylic, and in a new technique for me, as I explore different ways of capturing more abstract landscapes.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Greece.

Back from Fishing, Skopelos

Another small painting done whilst staying in Skiathos in July. The photo reference was taken in the neighbouring island of Skopelos. It’s so good to see these traditional fishing boats still have a place in a harbour full of yachts.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Greece.

Summer Grasses, Greece

When I’m driving in summer between the local villages here in the Peloponnese, I’m always fascinated by the shades of the long dried grasses along the edge of the roads.

This is a mixed media painting, using gesso and other techniques to add to the texture and depth.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Greece.

Highlights on Skiathos

This little painting was done whilst staying in in Skiathos in July. Its such a beautiful island, and there’s nothing more spectacular than arriving in the port and seeing the lovely town slowly crawling up the hill, the borzti and the nearby bays with their white buildings and church towers.

Art Weekly 177 – Light on Skiathos

2nd August 2017

Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere, and I recently spent a wonderful few days on the lovely island of Skiathos, painting up a storm with my good friend Yvonne, of Painting Skiathos (www.paintingskiathos.wordpress.com.) This little painting was one of the results.

We’re back in Koroni now, and although its not very touristy here, we still get our share of summer visitors, so its plenty of beach and relaxation time for us throughout August. Now that I’ve managed to re-organise ‘my studio’ into the corner of our dining room, there should hopefully be some new paintings coming along, and maybe even a long overdue Newsletter.

Art Weekly No 172 – Blue Chairs, Koroni

Blue Chair21st September 2016

As I mentioned in my recent Newsletter, I will be including some paintings from my #100 Painting Challenge in my Art Weekly mailouts. These paintings are a little smaller than A5, and done in various mediums – if you follow my Jackie Sherwood Artist page in Facebook, or Instagram, you may have seen them when they were originally posted.

I love these blue wooden chairs which seem to be scattered all over Greece! I took this photo when we first arrived in Koroni, and have often sketched and painted them. Unfortunately (for me) now, the building behind has been repaired and painted, very smartly, in a bright mustard colour. It just somehow just doesn’t have the appeal any more!

Art Weekly 171 – Fiskardo, Kefalonia

AW-171_Fiskardo-Kefalonia26th May 2016

It seems every time I send out an Art Weekly these days, I apologise for my tardiness! I’ve been working on larger canvasses recently, and the AWs seem to have taken a back seat. However, I’ve now decided to absorb some of my paintings from the #100 Painting Challenge which I’ve been taking part in, into the Art Weekly mailouts. They are smaller, hence the price reduction, and perhaps a little simplified, which I rather like. If you follow me on either Facebook or Instagram you may well have seem some of these!

This one is a small bay in Fiskardo, a lovely Venetian town in the north of Kefalonia. The water around the island is a brilliant turquoise, and I had fun capturing it, using acrylic inks for a change, in an endeavour to keep the freshness. It seems fitting to send this painting out today, as we’re heading to Kefalonia on Monday to meet up with my eldest son James, and his partner Danielle. We plan to spend a few days there, and on Zagkynthos, before coming back down to Koroni. Let’s hope our usual Greek summer kicks in soon!

Art Weekly 168 – Petals Underfoot

AW-168_PetalsUnderfoot

0th February 2016

You may have noticed I’ve been including the word ‘Underfoot’ in some of my new paintings just recently. This started way back in 2003 when I did an abstract painting from a photo I took of the ground in a thermal area in New Zealand. I loved the orange and creamy colours and various textures that I saw when I looked down to where I had placed my feet …. hence ‘underfoot! Admittedly, I have for some time, taken photos of the ground, along with rocks, rust and peeling paint – odd I know!  Anyway, this little one was taken outside our apartment over the summer when the good old Greek wind had left me a nice pile of petals and leaves, just waiting to be painted!

Bougainvillea Pathway, Skopelos

BouganvilliaPath_Skopelos

I stumbled across this lovely bougainvillea covered pathway, or set of steps, whilst staying in Skopelos last year.  The pink doorway at the top just seemed to set off the petals amongst the patterns of filtered light.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Greece.
