Across the Bay

AcrossTheBay

This painting is my representation of one of the many bays or estauries in the Nelson area, looking from Richmond towards Nelson and the Richmond Ranges. I’m fascinated with the  tidal patterns – it doesn’t matter what time of the day I’m there, it’s always different. I often spend time sitting at the water’s edge, sketching and roughly painting and immersing myself in the patterns of the water and sand. This painting is a little more realistic than my other ‘estaury’ paintings, but part of the series anyway!

Estuary Magic 1 & 2

Now that I’m living in New Zealand, I have a whole world of different inspiration to paint.  My initial fascination has been the local estauries and their tidal patterns. Having spent 15 years in the Mediterranean, the tidal movement of the oceans in the Tasman region are a fascination and total mystery to me. Each moment I spend sitting at the edge of the bay opens up a whole new watery landscape to sketch, and paint and lose myself in. These two paintings are the first in a series based on these estauries.

Thermal Beauty

When travelling recently in New Zealand, we visited the Wai-o-tapu (Maori for sacred waters) Geothermal area, just outside Rotorua. Within this was a geothermal pool called Artists Palette – well, what a perfect subject matter for abstract painting ideas! The colours were out of this world, and all created by the various gases bubbling in these pools.  I took just a small section of colour as my inspiration for this one, and it is just one of my paintings based on this wonderful area.

Underfoot #4

Underfoot4

This mixed media painting, one of a pair, was inspired by photographs I took of some wonderful rock formation whilst I was staying in Tinopai, New Zealand a few years ago.  The rocks were just near the water’s edge, and although I have accentuated the colours, it was the blues and oranges that caught my eye!

I call this series ‘Underfoot’ as over the years I seem to have developed a habit of taking photos of what I’m standing or walking on, if there’s something that catches my eye, hence ‘underfoot’!

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Abstracts.

Art Weekly No 135 – The Pioneer Church, NZ

The Pioner Church, NZFor Sale – 5th February 2014

As mentioned in my email, I’ve had this photo put aside to paint for years, and I always thought I’d taken it in Northland, New Zealand, when I spent some time there in 2005, but it appears that’s probably not the case! Now I’m totally flummoxed. The church does certainly seem to be in the style of those built in New Zealand in the 1800’s, but as someone pointed out, it could be Australia as the trees on either side look rather like gum trees and I suspect the dry grassy area in the foreground would fit too. If Australia, it could only be NSW, but at this stage I’ll leave ‘NZ’ in the painting title, and if anyone has any suggestions, I’d be glad to receive them!
