Art Weekly 179 – Sicilian Siesta

14th September 2017

I love wandering along the streets of Italy during siesta time when things are generally quiet and you can appreciate the architecture, although admittedly without the bustle of ‘life’ and with shutters down!  This painting is loosely based on a stay in Taormina in Sicily. I have taken a few liberties with the colours of the buildings, and I suspect the street wasn’t quite as deserted as this!

Art Weekly 178 – Along the Great Ocean Road

16th August 2017

One of my few paintings of Australian landscape – something I’m aiming to correct.  On one of our recent trips, we had a wonderful drive along this beautiful coastline. Nothing like rolling waves and gigantic rocks to get the juices flowing!

Art Weekly 177 – Light on Skiathos

2nd August 2017

Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere, and I recently spent a wonderful few days on the lovely island of Skiathos, painting up a storm with my good friend Yvonne, of Painting Skiathos (www.paintingskiathos.wordpress.com.) This little painting was one of the results.

We’re back in Koroni now, and although its not very touristy here, we still get our share of summer visitors, so its plenty of beach and relaxation time for us throughout August. Now that I’ve managed to re-organise ‘my studio’ into the corner of our dining room, there should hopefully be some new paintings coming along, and maybe even a long overdue Newsletter.

Art Weekly 176 – Spring’s Welcome – SOLD

13th June 2017 – SOLD

I love painting irises – the shape and colours are always so random. Masses of stalks and leaves all heading skywards, and leaning and crossing over each other, and the flowers with their various shades of purples and blues, (unless of course, they’re yellow or cream!)  I’ve named this painting ‘Spring’s Welcome’ because whenever I used to travel to France in the springtime, these cheerful irises seemed to be the first of the spring flowers to greet me, often growing wild along the deep ditches in the countryside.

Art Weekly 175 – A Rooftop Glimpse of St Ives

30th May 2017

It’s certainly been a while since my last Art Weekly painting, and thanks to you all for being so patient. I am back ‘on board’ now with the brushes flying. Let’s hope it lasts and I don’t get sucked into the lethargy of the European summer!

We spent a few days in the lovely English town of St Ives a couple of years ago, and I’ve been meaning to paint this one since. It has everything I love; rooftops, water and a tower, albeit a totally different colour palette than I’m used to.

Art Weekly 174 – The Next Wave, Curl Curl

aw-174-thenextwave_curlcurl6th December 2016 – SOLD

It sure has been a while since my last Art Weekly, and as those of you who follow me on Facebook and Instagram know, I’m up to my ears in “waves” right now.  It’s only a week before we hop on the plane to Sydney, and with an exhibition in February, I’ve plenty to get finished in that short time.

My Sydney exhibition, MOTHER OCEAN, is scheduled to open on 1st February at the Warringah Creative Space, 105 Abbott Street, North Curl Curl. The exhibition will show my paintings and eldest son, James’s fabulous photographs featuring, naturally enough, the ocean and its surrounds. James’ photos are the subject of most of my paintings, so it will be fascinating to see them both on the walls. I hope if you’re in the area, you can come along and say hello to us both, and see my temporary change of direction. I’m really loving painting the waves, but next year I do plan on returning to exploring more abstract European scenes as well.

In the meantime, this long overdue Art Weekly is just a small version of what I’ve been immersed in.

I’m having a few intermittent problems with my email right now, so in case anyone wants to respond to this, and receives a bounce back, please try me on jackiesinfrance@hotmail.com. It does still work!

Art Weekly 173 – A Touch of Sunshine

aw-173-atouchofsunshine27th September 2016

I took this photo a few years ago in France, when I was tootling around the back roads of the Lot. I came to a break in the trees, and there tucked away amongst the sombre colours of the surrounding forest, was this little field of sunflowers. What else could I do, but screech to a halt and leap out with my camera!  It’s always so good to be able to capture these memories with paint.

Art Weekly No 172 – Blue Chairs, Koroni

Blue Chair21st September 2016

As I mentioned in my recent Newsletter, I will be including some paintings from my #100 Painting Challenge in my Art Weekly mailouts. These paintings are a little smaller than A5, and done in various mediums – if you follow my Jackie Sherwood Artist page in Facebook, or Instagram, you may have seen them when they were originally posted.

I love these blue wooden chairs which seem to be scattered all over Greece! I took this photo when we first arrived in Koroni, and have often sketched and painted them. Unfortunately (for me) now, the building behind has been repaired and painted, very smartly, in a bright mustard colour. It just somehow just doesn’t have the appeal any more!

Art Weekly 171 – Fiskardo, Kefalonia

AW-171_Fiskardo-Kefalonia26th May 2016

It seems every time I send out an Art Weekly these days, I apologise for my tardiness! I’ve been working on larger canvasses recently, and the AWs seem to have taken a back seat. However, I’ve now decided to absorb some of my paintings from the #100 Painting Challenge which I’ve been taking part in, into the Art Weekly mailouts. They are smaller, hence the price reduction, and perhaps a little simplified, which I rather like. If you follow me on either Facebook or Instagram you may well have seem some of these!

This one is a small bay in Fiskardo, a lovely Venetian town in the north of Kefalonia. The water around the island is a brilliant turquoise, and I had fun capturing it, using acrylic inks for a change, in an endeavour to keep the freshness. It seems fitting to send this painting out today, as we’re heading to Kefalonia on Monday to meet up with my eldest son James, and his partner Danielle. We plan to spend a few days there, and on Zagkynthos, before coming back down to Koroni. Let’s hope our usual Greek summer kicks in soon!

Art Weekly 170 – Quiet Streets, Polperro

AW-170-Polperro,Cornwall27th April 2016

Apologies for another large gap in my Art Weekly paintings. I’ve been working on various large canvasses, and somehow haven’t managed to finish off any of the small ones I have patiently waiting. I hope to finish my Newsletter very soon, so you will be able to get a peek at where my energies have been directed!

This is a a street scene from the lovely town of Polperro in Cornwall. It was December when were there, and a tad chilly, hence the deserted look of the place. I believe during the summer months, it’s a whole different story!
