Art Weekly No 149 – Rock Formation, Northland

AW-149_RockFormation-Northl11th September 2014 –

I’m having some long sessions in the ‘studio’ right now to get a pile of paintings finished before we leave for Sydney, and its just occurred to me that most of them are buildings or boats. I was wondering why I’ve been feeling the urge to paint something organic. This happens occasionally and its rather relaxing not to worry about straight lines or perspective!

This is a portion of one of the beautifully coloured rocks that I came across when staying at Tinopai in New Zealand a few years ago.  I must admit I do have a bit of a ‘thing’ about rock formations and I’ve only used a little artistic licence with the colours!  As usual, I took a multitude of photos when I discovered them, and two or three have already become paintings over the years.  I am also working on two similar ones in a larger format.

Whilst writing this, I’m reminded that some of these photos (plus other ‘organic discoveries’ in Tinopai) are still on the Primrose Park Photography website, a really friendly photography group I used to belong to in Sydney. Art Weekly No 148 – Riomaggiore Colours, Cinque Terre

AW-148_RiomaggioreColours_C

3rd September 2014 –

Italy again, and one of my favourite spots to paint. Cinque Terre, although touristy, is an absolute inspiration to me with its five villages – a multitude of little brightly coloured awkwardly placed houses all crammed together over small picturesque harbours. Riomaggiore is one of the larger, and probably my favourite.  I noticed when painting this one that virtually every single shutter is painted the same shade of green too!

Art Weekly No 147 – Marche Provencal, Sanary sur Mer

AW-147_MarcheProvencal-Sana7th August 2014 –

As promised, a painting from France this week. I have so many photos of French markets, but the one near the lovely harbour of Sanary sur Mer is one of the most colourful one I’ve seen in a while. As I’ve said before, some of the larger markets seem to be moving towards white awnings – all part and parcel of the smart and very clever market vans that are ‘popped open’ with everything in place. It does seem more noticable so far in Italy than France, but it seems a pity to lose the traditional coloured umbrellas. I would imagine that the market traders are quite happy though, if they can afford the upgrade.

Art Weekly No 146 – The White Church, Skopelos

AW-146_TheWhiteChurch_Skope

31st August 2014 –

A slightly different format for my Art Weekly this time, as I’m trying various techniques in different formats. As you can see, this is a small canvas, which I really enjoy painting on, and I particularly like the fact that it doesn’t need framing, or if it is framed, it doesn’t need to be put under glass. I’ve used gesso and thicker paint on this canvas to add a little texture.

Continuing on with my current ‘favourite Greek Island’, I absolutely love this church which towers over the edge of Skopelos harbour, and have spent many hours trying to capture it in sketches and various painting styles. It seems to be sending an invitation to climb up the stairs and peek into its hidden corners! I believe it’s name is ‘The Church of the Presentation of Virgin Mary’ or Panagitsa tou Pyrgou – far too complicated to incorporate into a painting name!  The temple of the church evidently dates back to the 17th century and it contains icons from the 18th and 19th centuries plus a large icon that was salvaged from the sea. Beside the church there is a very cute single-aisle chapel dedicated to All Saints. The church and chapel are equally as beautiful looking down from above, with the church towers sitting against a backdrop of brilliant turquoise water. (I think perhaps I’ll paint something from France or Italy next week – everyone must be tired of hearing about brilliant turquoise water.)

Art Weekly No 145 – Skopelos, Greece

AW-145_Skopelos-Greece18th June 2014 –

As mentioned in my email, we leave Koroni tomorrow for the beautiful Greek Island of Skopelos where I’ll be tutoring at the inaugural Skopelos Art Painting Holidays. I’m really looking forward to a week of introducing people to the fun and joys of painting. What a perfect way to spend a holiday on a lovely Greek Island – painting in the morning, a taverna at lunchtime, and perhaps recovering the beach for the rest of the day… and then there’s dinner!  If you’ve ever had the urge to learn to paint, what better way to do it.  Perhaps check out the Skopelos Art Blog in a few days, to see what wonderful creations we’ve come up.

This painting, slightly larger than usual, is one of my impressions of Skopelos – a jumble of white buildings spilling down the hillside into the turquoise blue harbour. I’m looking forward to exploring all the little lanes and also seeing how many churches I can find. According to Wikipedia there’s about 360 churches and chapels on the island!

Art Weekly No 144 – Wandering through Parma, Italy

AW-144_Wandering-through-Pa3rd June 2014 –

Another painting from the Bologna / Parma region. There’s so much colour in the buildings in that area of Italy, and I have so many photos to remind me!  We had lunch in the restaurant in the foreground. A large plate of parmesan cheese and local prosciutto – perfect!

Art Weekly No 143 – The Bell, Alonissos

AW-143_The-Bell_Alonissos13th May 2014 –

When I visited the island of Alonissos last summer I spent time at a watercolour workshop learning with Artist, Christopher Hughes http://www.paintingalonissos.com/ and one of the beautiful places we visited to paint was the little chapel of Agios Anighiri, perched on the edge of the cliff with stunning views below to the Aegean and the nearby islands. After a wander through the pine forest to get to the chapel, I attempted a rather delicate watercolour (very unusual for me!) – see below.  Sitting even closer to the edge of the cliff was the lovely simple bell in this week’s painting.

Art Weekly No 142 – April Poppies

AW-142_AprilPoppies30th April 2014 –

It’s springtime here in Europe, and the poppies are everywhere again. In France, where I first fell in love with them, they’re memorable in large swathes (that word must have been invented just for poppies!) in open fields, but here in Greece they pop up everywhere. They seem to particularly like growing along the side of the roads, often mingling with the vibrant yellow daisies (remember, I do live in a rather rural area – can’t see this happening in Sydney!). They’re also found scattered around the villages, tucked in between old buildings, or against lovely crumbling stone walls. The poppies here too, do seem to be larger and a much richer red than the ones I remember from France.

I went sketching today with Gill’s On Location gang, to a lovely village up in the hills, and there they were, a whole wall full of poppies, just waiting for me.  I couldn’t resist a quick sketch!

Art Weekly 141 – Polperro, Cornwall

AW-141_Polperro-Cornwall22nd April 2014 – SOLD

I took this photo of the harbour in Polperro when we visited the UK in December. This is my first ever painting of anywhere in England and the colour palette was a bit challenging! One of my reasons for wanting to visit Cornwall again after nearly 40 years was to see and photograph these tiny fishing villages tucked into the Cornish coast.

Polperro is a magical place with its jumble of small white houses and narrow streets set around a pretty harbour with its bobbing boats (when the tide’s in) – sounds a bit like Greece really, apart from the tide, but, way different! The fish and chips eaten in a little topsy turvey pub on the harbours edge were most definitely a high point. It really doesn’t take much imagination to evoke the centuries of its history as a thriving smugglers port either.

Art Weekly No 140 – Blue Boats, Sanary sur Mer

AW-140_BlueBoats_Sanary-sur9th April 2014

There is something about the little harbour in Sanary sur Mer that I find quite magical. It’s lined with colourful Provencal style buildings, and tightly crammed with lovely old, even more colourful, traditional fishing boats. Tiny sea food stalls often line the port, selling today’s catch;  each stall proudly labelled with the name of the boat it was caught on. There is also a wonderful daily market under the trees with the usual spectacle of beautifully arranged fresh fruit and vegetables that the French do so very well.

Sanary sur Mer is a small, but interesting town on the French Cote d’Azur.  In the pre-war 1930’s, Sanary became home to a large number of German writers and intellectuals. I particularly like a quote from one, Hermann Kesten;  “If one lives in exile, the café becomes at once the family home, the nation, church and parliament, a desert and a place of pilgrimage, cradle of illusions and their cemetery… In exile, the café is the one place where life goes on”.  How true!  Sadly, following the outbreak of war, most of these exiles were imprisoned in Camp des Milles, a French concentration camp on the outside of Aix en Provence.
