Highlights on Skiathos

This little painting was done whilst staying in in Skiathos in July. Its such a beautiful island, and there’s nothing more spectacular than arriving in the port and seeing the lovely town slowly crawling up the hill, the borzti and the nearby bays with their white buildings and church towers.

Art Weekly 177 – Light on Skiathos

2nd August 2017

Summer is here in the Northern Hemisphere, and I recently spent a wonderful few days on the lovely island of Skiathos, painting up a storm with my good friend Yvonne, of Painting Skiathos (www.paintingskiathos.wordpress.com.) This little painting was one of the results.

We’re back in Koroni now, and although its not very touristy here, we still get our share of summer visitors, so its plenty of beach and relaxation time for us throughout August. Now that I’ve managed to re-organise ‘my studio’ into the corner of our dining room, there should hopefully be some new paintings coming along, and maybe even a long overdue Newsletter.

Art Weekly 171 – Fiskardo, Kefalonia

AW-171_Fiskardo-Kefalonia26th May 2016

It seems every time I send out an Art Weekly these days, I apologise for my tardiness! I’ve been working on larger canvasses recently, and the AWs seem to have taken a back seat. However, I’ve now decided to absorb some of my paintings from the #100 Painting Challenge which I’ve been taking part in, into the Art Weekly mailouts. They are smaller, hence the price reduction, and perhaps a little simplified, which I rather like. If you follow me on either Facebook or Instagram you may well have seem some of these!

This one is a small bay in Fiskardo, a lovely Venetian town in the north of Kefalonia. The water around the island is a brilliant turquoise, and I had fun capturing it, using acrylic inks for a change, in an endeavour to keep the freshness. It seems fitting to send this painting out today, as we’re heading to Kefalonia on Monday to meet up with my eldest son James, and his partner Danielle. We plan to spend a few days there, and on Zagkynthos, before coming back down to Koroni. Let’s hope our usual Greek summer kicks in soon!

Bougainvillea Pathway, Skopelos

BouganvilliaPath_Skopelos

I stumbled across this lovely bougainvillea covered pathway, or set of steps, whilst staying in Skopelos last year.  The pink doorway at the top just seemed to set off the petals amongst the patterns of filtered light.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Greece.

Art Weekly 166 – Sissi Reflections, Crete

AW-166_SissiReflections_Crete

20th January 2016 –

Its a cold wet winter’s day here in Greece, so its nice to add something a little more cheerful to remind myself what’s in store! We spent the night in Sissi a while back. Its a small town on the north coast of Crete and it had all the criteria for a great little Greek stop-over – lots of tavernas, bright blue water and reflections!

This painting is a little smaller than usual as it forms part of my #100 Painting Challenge in which I’m trying different techniques and mediums. This painting however, somehow managed to turn out in my ‘usual style’!

Art Weekly 163 – Come Inside, Chania, Crete

AW-163_ComeInside-Chania,Crete

16th December 2015 –

A different colour palette with this painting, which was I found a bit tricky as so many of my recent paintings have been in blues and greens.  Strangely too, this painting hails from the lovely Chania in Crete, as did my previous one.  There are so many beautiful little laneways packed with inviting restaurants and bars there, so plenty of exploring required.

Art Weekly 162 – Blue Door, Chania, Crete

AW-162_BlueDoor,Chania-Cret
16th November 2015 –

Finally, back into it……It’s been some time since I sent out a weekly painting as we’ve been on the road yet again – two months of driving around Sicily, Italy, France and the UK – blogs to come soon hopefully!  This painting I had hoped to finish before we left, but it just didn’t quite come together in time.

I took this photo whilst wandering around the back streets of Chania on the lovely Greek island of Crete. It’s just one of the many peeling, battered, doors I’ve photographed over the years, and I suspect it was the peeling blue and orange paint that encouraged me to paint this one.

This door was in what seemed to be in an interesting old Turkish area of the town with the nearby Agios Nicholas church which was built back in Venetian times. It was unusual in that it had an Ottoman minaret still standing, as well as a lovely Greek Orthodox domed bell tower. Wonderful that they have the been able to incorporate all three periods of history and leave them standing for future generations.

Art Weekly 151 – Three Figs

AW-151-ThreeFigs21st October 2014 –

The Greek summer is behind us now, and all the figs have finished. This year seemed to have produced a bumper crop, and I’ve had my full share of figs of all shapes and sizes. My favourites are the yellowish ones (honey figs?) which seem to appear earlish, but for a short season initially. Then for the next 3 months, there’s an abundance of various purple varieties, and again more yellow ones – they just seem to go on forever!  I even managed to grow about a dozen myself, in a pot on the balcony!

Art Weekly No 146 – The White Church, Skopelos

AW-146_TheWhiteChurch_Skope

31st August 2014 –

A slightly different format for my Art Weekly this time, as I’m trying various techniques in different formats. As you can see, this is a small canvas, which I really enjoy painting on, and I particularly like the fact that it doesn’t need framing, or if it is framed, it doesn’t need to be put under glass. I’ve used gesso and thicker paint on this canvas to add a little texture.

Continuing on with my current ‘favourite Greek Island’, I absolutely love this church which towers over the edge of Skopelos harbour, and have spent many hours trying to capture it in sketches and various painting styles. It seems to be sending an invitation to climb up the stairs and peek into its hidden corners! I believe it’s name is ‘The Church of the Presentation of Virgin Mary’ or Panagitsa tou Pyrgou – far too complicated to incorporate into a painting name!  The temple of the church evidently dates back to the 17th century and it contains icons from the 18th and 19th centuries plus a large icon that was salvaged from the sea. Beside the church there is a very cute single-aisle chapel dedicated to All Saints. The church and chapel are equally as beautiful looking down from above, with the church towers sitting against a backdrop of brilliant turquoise water. (I think perhaps I’ll paint something from France or Italy next week – everyone must be tired of hearing about brilliant turquoise water.)
