Art Weekly No 136 – Reflections of Alonissos 2

This is another painting based on one of my favourite themes, ‘reflections’. Once again I took this photo on the lovely Greek island of Alonissos. The line of fishing boats in the harbour below my hotel just cried out for frequent visits to determine which time of the day gave off the best reflections. Early evening, with the intensity of colours and patterns on the water, seemed to be the winner. I enjoy painting these and losing myself in the abstract!

Beginners Acrylics – Week 1

The start of a whole new experience for three new painters, plus some ongoing tuition for another who had done the course before.

We started the morning with lots of instruction, some mixing of colours, and demonstrations, then it was onto the paintings.  Considering the beginners had done no painting before, they did incredibly well, with most of them being halfway through their first painting and onto the ‘ink’ phase.  We’ll see how these look after the next class – you’ll be surprised!BWk1-JennyBWk1-Annette BWk1-Marjon BWk1-JanFor more information about Gill’s courses, http://artistswindow.com

Art Weekly No 135 – The Pioneer Church, NZ

The Pioner Church, NZFor Sale – 5th February 2014

As mentioned in my email, I’ve had this photo put aside to paint for years, and I always thought I’d taken it in Northland, New Zealand, when I spent some time there in 2005, but it appears that’s probably not the case! Now I’m totally flummoxed. The church does certainly seem to be in the style of those built in New Zealand in the 1800’s, but as someone pointed out, it could be Australia as the trees on either side look rather like gum trees and I suspect the dry grassy area in the foreground would fit too. If Australia, it could only be NSW, but at this stage I’ll leave ‘NZ’ in the painting title, and if anyone has any suggestions, I’d be glad to receive them!

Art Weekly No 133 – Reflets de France

This title is actually a well known food brand here, but I do think it also suits this painting as, to me, it is one of the rather memorable ‘reflections of France’.  These long straight roads lined with plane trees are such a wonderful sight at all times of the year, but there is something quite stunning about them in winter when they’re almost bare and their trunks glimmer almost white in the sunshine. We have been getting plenty of sunshine here in the Languedoc, but that also comes with COLD. When I got inside following my early morning trot down to the boulangerie recently, Peter was pleased to point out that was minus 5oC! I suspect it might almost be warmer in the UK (and that’s saying something!) where we’re heading off towards tomorrow, with a few days exploring Normandy along the way.

Art Weekly No 132 – Le Marche, Aix en Provence

As you might have gathered from my recent blog, we’re now in France, after a great saunter through Italy. My previous post gives you the highlights of that.

I’ve never managed to get to Aix en Provence, which is strange considering we lived within a 2 hour drive for 3 years. We’ve had a couple of attempts during our past French trips, but it never quite worked out, and once we even arrived there, but couldn’t find hotel.  This time we were determined to at least have a look at the place. We spent the night, and next morning managed to land right in the midst of the Saturday market – a real bonus for me, of course. I was becoming convinced that many of the French markets were abandoning the coloured umbrellas, and leaning more towards the practical white ones, often attached to the side of the ever more efficient vans.  But there they were, in all their glory – umbrellas in every colour, stretched through a large area of Aix.  It was a very crowded market, so taking photos proved a little tricky, and I have plenty of heads and elbows in some of my shots as proof, and although the overall impression was one of multi-colours, when narrowing it down for photos, I didn’t quite capture it as I would have liked, but ho hum….. it was still great. The mushroom stand was just amazing, as being autumn, the cepes were there in all their glory, giant ones this year too.

Anyway, this little painting is actually a watercolour, worked up in my rather heavy handed acrylic method of painting. The trick with watercolour I believe, is leaving lots of nice white paper – something I am still trying to achieve. This one depicts a tiny section of the flower market, but there will be more of these market scenes to follow. Have I said that before I wonder…..?

A Painting A Week No 130 – Reflections of Alonissos

When I was staying in the port of Patitiri on the lovely Greek Island of Alonissis in July, beneath my hotel window was a long line of fishing boats. They would be ‘missing’ when I woke in the mornings, and then gradually returned later in the day. I wandered past them most days in the hope of some good reflections and found that after 7pm they were at their best! Quite a few of the boats were red, and their reflections against the brilliant blue and turquoise water was definitely a painting in the making.

Koroni Arts Festival, Koroni, Greece – September 2013

In conjunction with the Koroni Arts Festival, my latest and joint exhibition with fellow artist Gill Tomlinson, got off to a flying start with a great opening on 11th September. We were fortunate to be able to have our Exhibition in the lovely Maniatakeion building in ‘downtown’ Koroni, perfect with its large white walls and high ceilings. It was a particularly hot and steamy night, and I think the very professional interview and video has Gill and I looking surprisingly composed and cool!

I had various recently completed paintings on display, along with Gill’s mostly collage and mixed media works. The table down the middle of the Gallery contained our sketchbooks, which created a lot of interest. Some people even asked if they were for sale…. right!

A Painting A Week No 129 – Virginian Creeper, Chateau Biron

I took this photo during my first French sojourn in the Lot district in 2003. I’ve always loved the photo and intended to paint it, and its taken me this long!  Its a start, but I would like to attempt a large canvas – will add it to the list.

I was visiting Chateau Biron at the time, and was captured by the gold and red Virginian Creeper climbing on the stonework inside the courtyard walls of the Chateau.  Its been a long time, but I still remember it clearly!

A Painting A Week No 128 – A Little Lavender, Provence

For Sale – 7th August 2013 – 

Summer in France is always brimming with beautiful flowers, one of the most exceptional being the lavender. Huge swathes of it turn the countryside into patches of purple and its always interesting to see what’s grown alongside, or sometimes, what pops up wildly in the middle of it. I took this photo near Gordes one summer. It was just a small field, but I liked the combination with the pink shrub, which I believe is the Ile de France Butterfly Bush, or Buddleia.

A Painting A Week No 127 – Chania, Crete

For Sale – 31st July 2013 – 

We were in Crete a little over a year ago with some Sydney friends, and this was my favourite place. Chania is the second largest city in Crete, but it feels more like a bustling town. The ‘old town’ is built around a lovely harbour, and crammed with the usual Greek tavernas and bars. Behind this, is a myriad of lanes and alleyways to explore – fairly touristy I guess, but the whole place does have a great buzz to it, even when you get further away from the harbour, where’ll you’ll also find some interesting Minoan excavations, as well as Venetian and Turkish areas.

This painting is of a very small area along the waterfront (our hotel was the pale blue one on the right!), with the haphazard line of awnings, and shops and restaurants below. It was fairly windy when we visited, and the harbour was rough, hence no boats lined up along the front.
