Sandstone Inspiration 2

AB-04_SandstoneInspiration2

This mixed media canvas forms part of a new series for me.  This is the 2nd of 3 small paintings which form part of my new Sandstone Inspiration series, and were inspired by my photos of the amazing sandstone rock formations that can be found along the Australian coastline. This one was at Curl Curl, Sydney.  These 3 paintings could be hung together to form a triptych.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Abstracts.

Art Weekly 166 – Sissi Reflections, Crete

AW-166_SissiReflections_Crete

20th January 2016 –

Its a cold wet winter’s day here in Greece, so its nice to add something a little more cheerful to remind myself what’s in store! We spent the night in Sissi a while back. Its a small town on the north coast of Crete and it had all the criteria for a great little Greek stop-over – lots of tavernas, bright blue water and reflections!

This painting is a little smaller than usual as it forms part of my #100 Painting Challenge in which I’m trying different techniques and mediums. This painting however, somehow managed to turn out in my ‘usual style’!

Art Weekly 165 – Bologna Portico

AW-165_BolognaPortico-800
13th January 2016 –

Bologna, Italy again. I really love this city although it always seems that when we start off in southern Italy, or this time, Sicily, by the time we arrive in Bologna, autumn is always waiting for us. Still, with Bologna’s 40 kilometres of porticoes, what better place to have a little inclement weather!

Beneath the Sea

OC-03_Beneath the Sea

A painting based on another of my son, James’ photos.  It was taken at a popular surfing spot near Manly in Sydney, called Winki Pop!  I always used to enjoy standing on the cliff top above when the waves were huge, watching the surfers, and had never given any thought to what was underneath on a calm day!

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Oceans.

Underfoot #4

Underfoot4

This mixed media painting, one of a pair, was inspired by photographs I took of some wonderful rock formation whilst I was staying in Tinopai, New Zealand a few years ago.  The rocks were just near the water’s edge, and although I have accentuated the colours, it was the blues and oranges that caught my eye!

I call this series ‘Underfoot’ as over the years I seem to have developed a habit of taking photos of what I’m standing or walking on, if there’s something that catches my eye, hence ‘underfoot’!

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Abstracts.

South Coast Shorebreak

South Coast Shorebreak

I believe this shot was taken at Invadda Beach, on the NSW South Coast of Australia and is another of James’ photos. I’m really enjoying painting these as it’s such different subject matter from my usual European ones – believe it or not though, the technique is very similar, just without the straight lines and ink!

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Oceans.

Art Weekly 163 – Come Inside, Chania, Crete

AW-163_ComeInside-Chania,Crete

16th December 2015 –

A different colour palette with this painting, which was I found a bit tricky as so many of my recent paintings have been in blues and greens.  Strangely too, this painting hails from the lovely Chania in Crete, as did my previous one.  There are so many beautiful little laneways packed with inviting restaurants and bars there, so plenty of exploring required.

Art Weekly 162 – Blue Door, Chania, Crete

AW-162_BlueDoor,Chania-Cret
16th November 2015 –

Finally, back into it……It’s been some time since I sent out a weekly painting as we’ve been on the road yet again – two months of driving around Sicily, Italy, France and the UK – blogs to come soon hopefully!  This painting I had hoped to finish before we left, but it just didn’t quite come together in time.

I took this photo whilst wandering around the back streets of Chania on the lovely Greek island of Crete. It’s just one of the many peeling, battered, doors I’ve photographed over the years, and I suspect it was the peeling blue and orange paint that encouraged me to paint this one.

This door was in what seemed to be in an interesting old Turkish area of the town with the nearby Agios Nicholas church which was built back in Venetian times. It was unusual in that it had an Ottoman minaret still standing, as well as a lovely Greek Orthodox domed bell tower. Wonderful that they have the been able to incorporate all three periods of history and leave them standing for future generations.

Art Weekly 158 – Barga Rooftops, Italy

AW-158_BargaRooftops-Italy3rd June 2015 –

A couple of years ago, we spent a week in Barga with two Australian friends. We rented a lovely house near the top of the village just under the Romanesque Duomo which entertained us with its unusual bell ringing. Thankfully, the ‘key’ to these mystery sequences was given to us by our wonderful landlord, Frank.

Barga is a medievale town in the Lucca province of Italy, and perfectly placed to use as a base to explore the delights of various famous Tuscan towns. It was a great example of what I consider a perfect hilltop town with buildings of crumbling character, lots of narrow laneways, cafes and restaurants, but nothing too touristy.
