Mother Ocean, Curl Curl, Sydney – February 2017

This was a thoroughly enjoyable exhibition, firstly because it was combined with my eldest son, James’ wonderful photography, and secondly because my paintings were in a totally different direction from what I usually paint.  The Creative Space in Curl Curl, Sydney, is a large and beautifully presented exhibition space and we were able to use it not only to promote our paintings and photographs, but also to tell the story of the importance of saving our beautiful oceans and marine life.

For this exhibition, I had created a new series of paintings of Australian waves and abstract ocean patterns. This was a totally new direction for me – from the structural forms of European buildings (although usually wonky!) to the curves and exciting formation of waves and the ocean, not to mention a totally new colour palette.

Art Weekly 171 – Fiskardo, Kefalonia

AW-171_Fiskardo-Kefalonia26th May 2016

It seems every time I send out an Art Weekly these days, I apologise for my tardiness! I’ve been working on larger canvasses recently, and the AWs seem to have taken a back seat. However, I’ve now decided to absorb some of my paintings from the #100 Painting Challenge which I’ve been taking part in, into the Art Weekly mailouts. They are smaller, hence the price reduction, and perhaps a little simplified, which I rather like. If you follow me on either Facebook or Instagram you may well have seem some of these!

This one is a small bay in Fiskardo, a lovely Venetian town in the north of Kefalonia. The water around the island is a brilliant turquoise, and I had fun capturing it, using acrylic inks for a change, in an endeavour to keep the freshness. It seems fitting to send this painting out today, as we’re heading to Kefalonia on Monday to meet up with my eldest son James, and his partner Danielle. We plan to spend a few days there, and on Zagkynthos, before coming back down to Koroni. Let’s hope our usual Greek summer kicks in soon!

Sandstone Inspiration 2

AB-04_SandstoneInspiration2

This mixed media canvas forms part of a new series for me.  This is the 2nd of 3 small paintings which form part of my new Sandstone Inspiration series, and were inspired by my photos of the amazing sandstone rock formations that can be found along the Australian coastline. This one was at Curl Curl, Sydney.  These 3 paintings could be hung together to form a triptych.

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Abstracts.

Underfoot #4

Underfoot4

This mixed media painting, one of a pair, was inspired by photographs I took of some wonderful rock formation whilst I was staying in Tinopai, New Zealand a few years ago.  The rocks were just near the water’s edge, and although I have accentuated the colours, it was the blues and oranges that caught my eye!

I call this series ‘Underfoot’ as over the years I seem to have developed a habit of taking photos of what I’m standing or walking on, if there’s something that catches my eye, hence ‘underfoot’!

Details of this painting can be found in Gallery – Abstracts.

Art Weekly No 149 – Rock Formation, Northland

AW-149_RockFormation-Northl11th September 2014 –

I’m having some long sessions in the ‘studio’ right now to get a pile of paintings finished before we leave for Sydney, and its just occurred to me that most of them are buildings or boats. I was wondering why I’ve been feeling the urge to paint something organic. This happens occasionally and its rather relaxing not to worry about straight lines or perspective!

This is a portion of one of the beautifully coloured rocks that I came across when staying at Tinopai in New Zealand a few years ago.  I must admit I do have a bit of a ‘thing’ about rock formations and I’ve only used a little artistic licence with the colours!  As usual, I took a multitude of photos when I discovered them, and two or three have already become paintings over the years.  I am also working on two similar ones in a larger format.

Whilst writing this, I’m reminded that some of these photos (plus other ‘organic discoveries’ in Tinopai) are still on the Primrose Park Photography website, a really friendly photography group I used to belong to in Sydney.
